Incredible growth of Icelandic Angelica herb

26 Apr 2011

Angelica has now started growing in Iceland. This photo was taken in Vík in South Iceland, which is one of the places SagaMedica harvests Angelica.

The leaves are only visible to begin with but later in the summer it reaches 6 feet in height and sports beautiful flowers which radiate out from the center of the umbels*. By that time, SagaMedica harvests it.

Icelandic lambs love to eat the leaves and stems of Angelica in early summer. In fact, they go far up the mountains to get as much of it as possible. Icelandic lambs reach full growth in about 4 months, which is almost twice as fast as lambs in some other countries. Maybe nutritious Angelica has something to do with that?

The small green plant is Angelica archangelica

(*An umbel is the structure consisting of flower stalks spreading out from a common center)

Here you can see exactly the same field only 2 months later (taken last year).
